Concepts

Who keeps the gardens looking so nice? How are plants selected for the gardens? Where do the plants come from?  How do we manage insect and weed populations?  How do we encourage people to visit the gardens?  Through live plants, insect specimens and a variety of props and tools, students can learn the answers to these questions and explore the many job opportunities in a Public Gardens, such as:   Botanist, Entomologist, Horticulturist, Gardener, Landscape Designer, Landscape Architect, Nursery Manager, Greenhouse Production Supervisor, Volunteer Coordinator, Educator, Fund Raiser, Taxonomist, Irrigator, Computer Programmer, Bookkeeper, Administrative Assistant, PR Liaison, or Advertising Executive. 

Program Objectives

At the conclusion of the program, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify and describe the many careers in the horticulture industry.

  2.  Discuss the role of a Public Garden in today’s society.

  3.  Identify beneficial and pest organisms that inhabit gardens.

Program 'Pack' Contents:

  1.  List of suggested pre-visit activities for curriculum integration.

  2.  A questionnaire for individuals to establish their career preferences.

  3.  Several biographies of Texas Discovery Gardens staff.

  4. Writing and/or interview activities for after the program.
