Historic Groundbreaking Ceremony
With a silver pry bar, ground was broken on Nov. 16, 2004, for the Rosine Smith Sammons
Butterfly House and Insectarium at Texas Discovery Gardens in Fair Park.
Encompassing more than 230,000 cubic feet, the Sammons Butterfly House will be
one of the largest year-round live butterfly exhibits in the world.
Entering on the second floor at the canopy level and descending on a spectacular
spiral walkway to the lower level, visitors will stroll among more than 100
species of free-flying tropical butterflies. Through unique underground and
underwater windows on the lower level, the fascinating secret lives of beetles,
earthworms and aquatic insects will be revealed.
Vision & Generosity
The Rosine Smith Sammons Butterfly House and
Insectarium is funded by the Rosine Foundation Fund of Communities Foundation of
Texas. Through the vision and generosity of Sammons' daughter, Mary Anne Cree, a
three million dollar lead gift was made in honor of her mother's love of
butterflies and nature.
The Butterfly House and Insectarium is the keystone of The Metamorphosis Capital
Campaign at Texas Discovery Gardens. With a goal of raising $7.5 million, The
Metamorphosis is providing funds to greatly expand and enhance the lively,
interactive programs offered for children and adults at Texas Discovery Gardens.
You can be part of this exciting project!
Individuals, foundations,
businesses, corporations, social organizations and civic groups are invited to be part of The Metamorphosis. Capital
campaign gifts may be in the form of cash; pledges over a three- to five-year period; securities;
bequests and other planned gifts. All contributions will be appropriately
acknowledged, unless anonymity is requested. For more information, please contact Melissa
Martin at 214-428-7476 ext. 25.
