Daily Butterfly Release Talk

Join us Daily at Noon for a talk and butterfly release as we let newly-emerged butterflies out into the conservatory.

Enjoy the two-level butterfly house with hundreds of free-flying tropical butterflies. See more than 60 species of tropical plants. Looking for more than butterflies? In our lobby, we have rotating insect and arthropod displays. See eye-to-eye with scorpions, hissing cockroaches, pillbugs and tarantulas!

Travel to the tropics within Dallas City Limits! Visit our tropical butterfly house and learn all about our butterflies and the countries they come from. This is always a fun festival; leis and special Texas Discovery Gardens passports are included! Wear your tropical best. Included with admission.
Plant Propagation Workshop
January 24, 2015 from 2 pm - 4 pm
Grow your own plants from cuttings and seeds and save money! Learn easy-to-implement techniques from an expert in plant propagation, Dallas County Master Gardener Roseann Ferguson. Bring home plant starts to get your garden going! $25; $20 for TDG Members. Register in advance.

Desert Ecology

Native and Adapted Shade Gardens

Gardening in the shade can be difficult. In addition to low light levels, soils are often too dry or too moist. You can ban those boring groundcovers; there are plenty of beautiful, drought tolerant shade plants out there! $25, $20 for TDG Members. Register in advance.

Stroll through our romantic Butterfly House as the sun sets and release ladybugs with your special someone. Enjoy hors d’oeuvres featuring chocolate covered insects. Rose Pruning Workshop

Join Dr. Peter Schaar in our Heirloom Rose Garden as he slashes through the heart of rose pruning myths. Learn the proper way to prune your roses to have plentiful, gorgeous blooms come spring. Take home a new rose bush to add to your own rose garden! $25, $20/Members. Register in advance.
Landscape Design

Our Director of Horticulture, Roger Sanderson, shows you how he designed our newest gardens and how you can use these same techniques to design a garden of your own. Learn the proper way to measure your location, plot plants, and lay out your space prior to planting. Have you ever wanted to grow your own vegetables but feel overwhelmed by the thousands of seed packets in the store? We’ll instruct you how to prepare your plot; pick the right seeds; prepare your seeds; plant, care for and pick your produce; and give a timetable for each step! $25, $20 for TDG Members. Nutrition Facts: Gardens don't come with labels
April 25, 2015 from 3 pm - 5 pm
Everything we eat has a label telling us exactly what’s in it -- unless we grow our own food! We tell you how to really understand those labels, and then we’ll share what the labels would say if your garden produce came with them. $25, $20 for TDG Members. Register in advance.
