Daily Butterfly Release Talk

Inside the Rosine Smith Sammons Butterfly House and Insectarium

Join us Daily at Noon for a talk and butterfly release as we let newly-emerged butterflies out into the conservatory.

Enjoy the two-level butterfly house with hundreds of free-flying tropical butterflies. See more than 60 species of tropical plants. Looking for more than butterflies? In our lobby, we have rotating insect and arthropod displays. See eye-to-eye with exotic stick insects, hissing cockroaches, pillbugs and tarantulas!

Butterfly Tea Party featuring “Bonjour Butterfly”

Enjoy ‘fancy’ activities, tea, snacks, and more as we celebrate the book, “Bonjour Butterfly,” by Jane O'Connor! We’ll end our party with crafts and special edition of our noon butterfly release. Join us for this park-wide July 4th celebration! Enjoy our gardens and butterflies for two dollar admission, with crafts and activities all day. We stay open until 7 pm. $2 admission.

Get out in the garden on this family friendly walk as we examine why ponds are so important to the local ecosystem. It ends in time for you to catch the noon Butterfly Release talk in our conservatory. Included with admission.
Dallas Beekeeping
July 11, 2015 from noon - 2 pm
Join Susan Pollard, local beekeeper and educator, as she extolls the benefits to having bees in your garden. Enjoy a honey tasting, a demonstration of proper bee handling and a chance to see honey harvesting! $35; $28 for TDG Members. Register in Advance.

Murderous Plants

Plants may be beautiful, but they can also be poisonous! Join us as Barney Lipscomb, Leonhardt Chair of Texas Botany at the Botanical Research Institute of Texas, takes us on an enchanting journey through the cultural, historical and mythological aspects of poisonous plants. Take a look at his personal collection of poisonous paraphernalia. $15, $10 for TDG Members. Sign up for both Edible Wild Plants and Murderous Plants for just $30; $25 for TDG members!

Orchid Workshop

Texas A&M AgriLife Program Specialist Dotty Woodson shares her love of orchids and how to raise them. Dotty covers orchid growing supplies, nutritional requirements, grooming techniques, and pest and disease control. Take an orchid home with you! $50, $40 for TDG Members. Register in advance.

Join Dallas County Master Gardener Joanne Durbin as she teaches us how to make beautiful display plates and décor in the shape of leaves we gather in our garden. Make and paint a leaf cast! Supplies will be provided. $50, $40 for TDG Members. Register in advance.

Fascinating World of Butterflies
July 25, 2015 from 10:30 am – 1:30 pm
Discover the fascinating world of butterflies with Dale Clark, co-founder of the Dallas County Lepidopterist Society. The class begins at Texas Discovery Gardens and ends with a field trip by caravan to Dale’s butterfly farm south of Dallas. The farm is not usually open to the public. This is your chance to explore on a behind-the-scenes tour! Class is capped at 30 participants, so register early! $30; $24 for TDG members.
