Rosine Smith Sammons Butterfly House
and Insectarium to open Sept. 12, 2009
We are building a
Butterfly House! With the Grand Opening in
September, 2009, our newly remodeled Horticultural
Museum will house the only year round Butterfly
House in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
A
Living Museum
You will enter on the second floor at the canopy
level and descend on a spectacular spiral walkway to
the lower level. Stroll among more than 100 species
of free-flying tropical butterflies.
Peek through underground and underwater
windows on the lower level and discover the
fascinating secret lives of beetles, earthworms and
aquatic insects.

Butterfly Plant Sale a success thanks to the support of dedicated volunteers and local businesses
Our Butterfly Plant Sale was a major success thanks to our sponsors and volunteers. We would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the following companies for donating their organic gardening products: Bradfield Organics, Green Lake Nursery, Nature’s Guide, Maestro-Gro, Preservation Tree Services, Rabbit Hill Farm, Ron’s Organic Dynamics, and Soil Mender.
A word from Blake Morgan, Programs and Volunteers Manager...
"Last week we had our most successful Butterfly Plant Sale thanks to our wonderful volunteers and our dedicated staff. A corps of 50 volunteers worked as knowledge Plantsperts and Personal Shoppers, as well as organized Plant Parking Attendants, Ticket Adders, and Carry-Out helpers.
"Saturday brought light rain and cooler temperatures, but that didn't stop shoppers or volunteers. All day long we heard positive comments about our knowledgeable, helpful, organized volunteers. Thank you for helping us raise more than $30,000 for programs at Texas Discovery Gardens. Our mission is to teach people how to use native and adapted plants to restore the urban landscape, and you all helped us serve that mission with your knowledge and dedication. Thank you so much!"
Tree Climbing Demonstration Sat., March

State Champion Tree Climber and Certified Arborist

demonstrate his tree climbing skills to all of us safely
below on the ground from 11 am to noon Saturday,
March 28. It's part of our annual Conservation in Action
Event, a Free family Fair brought to you by the City of
Dallas, University of North Texas, and Texas Discovery
Gardens. See our Upcoming Events page for details. .
Organic Fashion Show still making the
news
The Dallas Morning News just released a short video of
our Organic Fashion Show! The show, in August of 2008,
showed guests just how easy it is to grow green from the
ground up.
See the video.
Gardens Participate in Christmas Parade
On Dec. 6, 2008, Texas Discovery Gardens participated in
the 21st annual Neiman Marcus Adolphus Christmas Parade.
Visitors got to see Strawberry Shortcake riding in a pink
Volkswagen Beetle with our name on the side. Parade
participants carried poinsettias and big butterfly balloons.
A Year-End Letter from the Executive
Director
Dear Friends of Texas
Discovery Gardens,
The Staff and Board of Texas Discovery Gardens
wishes to take a moment to thank you -- our
wonderful donors, members, volunteers and
visitors -- for continuing to support Texas
Discovery Gardens with your gifts of time,
talent and financial resources.
The Rosine Smith Sammons Butterfly House and
Insectarium is very close to completion! We are
encouraged about the progress that has been made
and are excited about the progress we will make
in only a few short months. It’s sort of like
being in a car with the kids on a long trip and
hearing them say, “Are we there, yet?” No, we
aren’t there yet, but we will be very soon.
By the time you get this email, the ramp in the
conservatory will be welded together. The plants
have been ordered and will be installed in
February. The lobby is taking shape: the gift
shop, EarthKeepers? Children’s Classroom and
entrance to the Butterfly House have emerged in
a burst of color! A beautiful Terrazzo floor has
been installed, ground, sealed and is soon to be
polished.
When we go upstairs to the administrative area,
we get goose bumps to see the offices taking
shape with beautiful wooden door framing and
millwork (and lots of storage space)! Our staff
is so excited about the prospect of real offices
after our stint in the trailers and the Portland
Cement House.
In these economic times,
it is encouraging to see so many visitors coming
out to “see the butterflies” in the gardens.
When things get crazy, we have an even greater
need to find beauty and peace in this world.
Isn’t it nice to know that, even now, the plants
keep on growing and the butterflies keep flying?
We are anticipating the Grand Opening in
September of 2009 and look forward to seeing you
here!
We hope you will continue to keep
Texas Discovery Gardens in your thoughts and
that you will come out and visit when you can.
Thank you for all you do,
Melissa Martin, Staff and Board of Texas Discovery
Gardens
