Organic Gardening Methods

1.   Plant Selection & Inspection

Native and adapted plants tolerate local environmental conditions (climate, soil, rainfall, etc.) and support indigenous wildlife, including beneficial organisms.  The leaves, stems and roots of new plants are carefully examined for pest or disease symptoms before the plants are introduced into the garden.

2.  Site Selection

Plant needs and growth patterns are matched with site characteristics -- shady or sunny, well drained soil or moist soil, etc.

3.  Soil Building

Healthy soil is provided for plants to establish and thrive.  Compost, either homemade or purchased from reputable companies, is used to enhance fertility, texture and beneficial soil biota (organisms).

4.  Fertilizing

Appropriate natural fertilizers (Sustane, Green Sense, Fish Emulsion, etc) are used to boost plant growth and bloom. The soil is tested to determine the nutrient needs of the garden. Manufacturer recommended application rates are followed.

5.  Mulching

Between 2” to 3” of bark mulch are applied in the garden to conserve moisture, control weeds, recycle nutrients and contribute to soil health.

6.  Sanitation

Diseased plants are quickly removed to prevent spread of infection.

7.  Pruning

Pruning is used to remove small pest infestations and dead wood. Pruning encourages the natural shape and growth habit of plants.

8.  Natural pest control

Beneficial insects (ladybugs, green lacewings, trichogramma wasps) are released and natural predators (spiders, praying mantids, birds, beneficial nematodes, anoles) are encouraged to take up residence in the garden.

9. Tolerance

Some pest damage is accepted. Many pest species can be tolerated because they have a short season or life cycle. Natural controls keep noxious populations in check.

10. Organic pesticide compounds

Organic pest control products are used to contain unacceptable pest damage.  Products such as Bt, insecticidal soap, and horticultural oil are applied selectively and according to the manufacturers label.
