School & Educational Groups
If you are looking for an educational and outdoor field trip for your students, then visit Texas Discovery Gardens in Fair Park. We are a public, organic garden in the heart of Dallas. Located within easy walking distance of many Fair Park museums, especially the Dallas Aquarium and the Museum of Nature and Science's Planetarium. Our programs are TEKS aligned with Science, Math, Language Arts, and Social Studies standards. To make our programs more educational, we include a curriculum integration packet with each program. This packet will me mailed to your school and can be used to prepare your students in an interdisciplinary manner for the field trip.
EarthKeepers Programs
Gardening for Children (PreK - 2nd grade)
Students will recognize that people plant gardens for a variety of reasons. Students learn seed structure, the names of plant parts, and the basic components of a habitat. Each student will plant a seed in an individual container. Ideal for LEP students. Click here for more information on concepts, core objectives, and program pack contents.
Butterflies, Bugs, and Botany (1st - 6th grade)
Students will explore the amazing lives of insects and other arthropods by visiting various garden habitats to observe how creatures are adapted to specific environments. Special attention is paid to the interdependence of insects and plants, especially the process of pollination. Also available as a Social Studies program. Click here for more information on concepts, core objectives and program pack contents.
Math in Nature (2nd - 6th grade)
Students will learn how Math is used in a garden, and will record temperature, time and measurement data as they explore various habitats. Extensive post-visit worksheets use this data to solve problems and create tables, graphs and charts. Worksheets are designed to resemble TAKS tests and are grade-specific. Program is currently only available as a class field trip. Click here for more information on concepts, core objectives and program pack contents.
Terrarium Worlds (PreK - 2nd grade)
Students will learn about different regulatory cycles in nature (water cycle, carbon-oxygen cycle and/or nitrogen cycle - for 5th and 6th grade) and then create a classroom terrarium - a home for a plant - that demonstrates these cycles. Click here for more information on concepts, core objectives and program pack contents.
Life in the Compost Bin (1st - 6th grade)
Through composting techniques, students learn how materials from plants and animals can be recycled into rich soil for the garden. Students investigate the living things in a compost pile and learn about the role creatures play in recycling a system's energy. Students can also make their own worm bin for school or home. Click here for more information on concepts, core objectives, and program pack contents.
Careers in the Garden (2nd - 8th grade)
Landscape Architect, Educator, Gardener and Greenhouse Production Specialist are just a few of the jobs available in public gardens. Through live plants, insect specimens and a variety of props and tools, students experience and explore different careers related to public gardens. Ideal as an on-campus program for Career Days! Click here for more information on concepts, core objectives and program pack contents.
