Earthkeepers® Education Programs :  Terrarium Worlds

Concepts

  1. A terrarium is a clear, sealed container in which plants are grown in a moisture-balanced environment.
  2. A habitat is the environment in which a particular species, plant or animal lives (its "address"). A terrarium is an artificially-created habitat.
  3. Certain essential substances on the earth are continually recycled, and these great cycles sustain life on earth. The cycles are the Carbon-Oxygen Cycle, the Nitrogen Cycle and the Water Cycle. These same cycles operate on a smaller scale in a terrarium.

Program Objectives

  2. Discuss habitats and how they apply to terrariums.
  3. Discuss physical cycles that exist on earth: Carbon-Oxygen Cycle (photosynthesis and respiration), Nitrogen Cycle and the Water Cycle, and how they operate in terrariums.
  4. Recognize that the Conservatory is like a large terrarium.
